Whats the context?

A couple of TRP (Transient receptor potential) channels are well known for the mediation of chemesthetic sensations, yet, their functions in non-sensory systems are less well understood.

What challenge is tackled?

Thus, clarifying the non-sensory function of these channels as well as identifying their endogenous ligands is of great scientific interest.

What is done?

Focusing on primary human immune cells the RNA-expression of TRP-channels as well as the cellular responses to known TRP-channel ligands are studied.

What has come out of your work?

These analyses showed that for example TRPV1 ligands from ginger modulate the human cellular immune response, indicating a natural role of this channel in the human immune system.

Whats the value?

Our work can provide a better general understanding regarding the function of chemosensory ion-channels in non-sensory systems.
